B) IRA has recently offered, on their own, to disarm, and have been doing so.
A) Hezbollah has a position in the governement of Lebanon!
B) IRA is an outlaw group and has no official place in the Irish Republic's government.

B) IRA is fighting a foreign power who are occupying their nation.
Just a few minor differences. I guess you missed them.
My goodness! The response I just got from the Questioner was quite educational! Here it is, unedited.
From: johnb
Subject: ira
Message: no i did not miss **** all
i live in northen ireland ya prick!!!!
I would willingly have the IRA disbanded, and do not support their behavior, despite having a fierociously Irish wife! I'm English, Irish, Welsh, French, Scottish, Iroquois, Swiss, oh, boy, should I go on? I don't tolerate terrorism, but I also don't tolerate careless comparisons. I'm grateful the IRA are stepping down as the fight has been terrible and unjust in many ways on many sides, but the IRA won the race to become the most terrorist in nature of the two sides.
Too bad johnb wasn't really interested in an answer, just the chance to slander the IRA worse than they've painted themselves (which is quite a task, but he tried).
The drama continues with this note from:

Ah, well. Hopefully it gets more civilized from here.

Mckenzie, Hizbollah didn't even exist until after 1975 when Israel invaded Lebanon. So they are in a sense also figthting an occupier as the Israelis still have troops there in the guise of the South Lebanese Army.
Also it was Israel and the US that started it all by not consulting the Arabs about the establishment of Israel in 1948. See the book Holy Land, Unholy War for more info.
Israel has also used terror tactics look at the Shaba and Chatila camp massacres.
To end this, I'm not anti-Semite but a well educated realist, who'd like to bring this to peoples attention, The Arabs are also a Semitic people and hence if you are anti-Arab you could be labelled anti-semitic also.
This topic is like saying whats the difference between UK and USA? Answer is none both have propped up unpopular regimes, both invaded places that didn't belong to them and both got rich because of it. Use Britain circa1800s and the USA post 1945 for this.

Hezbollah received better weapons from the USSR when they were backing the Islamic Terrorist? That is the only difference I can see. Much of the Hot Spots we see around the world are direct outcome of the cold war. Hezbollah is, Iran is (though that was more our doing then the Soviet Union's), North Korea is. When the USSR dissolved, the lid cam off the controls. So now, we are stuck with cleaning up the mess left over from that era. If you put it in that context you can see why there is so much crap going on in the world.

IRA terrorists could on occasion make deals and keep them.
Hezbollah is destablizing a RIVAL terrorist group's elected government in this strange Palestinian civil war with Hamas.
So I'd say Hezbollah is even more snake-bitten and nihilistici than the IRA, though I didn't that it was possible to out-do that IRA at terrorism until after Hamas won that election.
Live and learn.

Hezbollah is a recognised political party with democratic representation and an active military unit.
Though labelled a terroist organisation by the USA, both the UN & EU have so far refrained from labelling it a prescribed terrorist group
The IRA is a paramilitary organisation that has given up violence and pledged to secure its aims through purely democratic means
Both groups started as military factions in civil wars

Here is a better question, aside from the dates of the following conflicts, what is the differences between the American War of Independence where we ambushed the English Army all the time and refused to battle them Army to Army because they had one of he greatest Armies in the World. We used the technique that weaker armies us against technologically superior Armies.
The Jewish people after WWII gained their independence from the English also by fighting with guerrilla tactics to win independence from England in 1946. Israel beat England in the land called Palestine, declared they were a Nation. The USA recognized Israel and she became a Nation.
Now, Hezbollah is a Shite Revolutionary movement fighting to achieve a gorilla war again Israel in support of the Palestinians.
The Ira was trying to win independence for Northern Ireland which was taken by the English. The Irish Republican Army still exists, but it is not openly fighting the English at the moment.
But, all four groups were using guerrilla tactics against a superior military power in a fight for independence.

what's the difference!!!!
wel first and foremost the Irish Republican Army have been Tryin for nearly a hundred years to get the english out of Ireland, and if it wasn't for the first World War, Ireland would be free of English occupation, but they just wouldn't listen to reason so the IRA took things into their own hands and fought a Guerilla War with the English. So that's one Main difference..... You Muppet!!!
