Hi. I'm an Audiologist.

Lots of things can cause "dizziness" so you really need to be evaluated by a physician, and possible several - depending on your specific symptoms and test results. Causes range from panic attacks, to migraine headaches, to medication side-effects, to multiple sclerosis, to inner ear disorder, to heart attacks, to strokes, and more...

As for short term relief during an attack if you are experiencing spinning vertigo from an ear disorder: it is usually better to keep your eyes open and focus your attention on an immobile object about 2-3 feet away (or as close as possible). This uses your eyes and your mind to "correct" the misinformation being sent from the ear.

If the attack is lasting longer than a few minutes or if you feel faint, have fever, are vomiting, or have any numbness in the extremities or slurring of speech - get to the Emergency Room.

Sit down. Get up slowly. Some say put your head below your heart. Im not sure if thats right though. Either way, it maybe symptoms of something else like high blood pressure. Or an ear infection. If it continuously happens, Id talk to a dr. Sometimes its just when you get up too fast.

I sit down for a few mintues and eventually get myself some fruit juice to drink. Being dizzy is a symptom of dehydration.

Find something to hold onto and sit down until my head stops spinning. After that, I get water and something to eat.
