This is how my high school teacher put it...

High School Calculus isn't really learning Calculus. Every College all over the world teaches Calculus differently. The purpose of HS Calc. is to show you some of the things you will learn along the way, i.e. integrals, derivatives, and all that jazz.

but that's what my teacher once told me.

There are many problems that calculus can solve whereas other mathematical process cannot easily solve. For every day life, calculus doesn't really serve any practical purpose.

Calculus will pay in "dividends" when you're in college or graduate school, and need to understand more technical and very highly abstract notions such as advanced nuclear physics, chemistry, and certain engineering applications. Physicians, lawyers, accountants have little need for calculus. Science researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, certain areas of mathematics and perhaps architecture might benefit with calculus.

If you plan on studying medicine, you'll need some background in calculus in order to better understand some of the science courses needed in your undergraduate (college) studies. Outside of this, you'll probably never use the calculus again.

The whole raising the IQ thing isnt true... off the bat.

Calculus has this thing where people think it is this super-minds version of math. It really isn't. Calculus was developed by Newton (geometrically, which is insane), to explain differential equations (which he created), and diff eq was used to explain the physical phenomena such as gravity and other forces he observed.

In actuality, calculus has huge benefits in people lives. Calculus for one gives a deeper understanding of basic mathematical priniciples, and that is always a good thing. Other ways calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems math, and other advanced maths have helped people is by advancing our technologies and knowledge. If you look down at you cell phone, the circuitry in there was designed with Laplace transforms, diff eq, and signals and systems concepts all based heavily in math, especially advanced math.

That is just an example. Look around you and every bit of technology in your house was in some way shape or form designed with math. All the way to speed-bumps on roads, to the shape of an airplane's wing. Advanced maths are all around us and help everyone everyday.

Calculus is the frist of the "higher" math courses; if you're planning to go into any technical fields, there will be a long series of such classes, so learn your basic calc. forwards and back, and try not to forget anything major.

Calculus will redifine how you think about things and analyze problems. If you master the basic concepts of calculus (there are really only two of them, but they require careful study and contemplation) then you will find ways to apply it, in a general sense, to your thinkning in many other areas.

Calculus is a requirement in many career fields, including physics, engineering, computer programming, etc. It's different than any other math you've ever taken; it's a different way of thinking. Perhaps it does raise your IQ, although I've never heard of that before.

anything that you study, any knowledge has benefits in life.something you study you get an opportunity to apply it directly and certain thing that you study make you a better thinking animal though they may not be directly used by you.a person who is well versed with calculus will have a better grasp of concepts like average values, instantaneous value sand limiting values.
anything that makes you think deeper will improve your IQ and calculus is no exception to that general rule
may be in your day to day life it may not be helpful depending upon what you do for a living

The only benefit of taking calculus in high school would be that you could take the AP test and pass out of calculus; that way you wont have to take it in college.

look people will tell you about all the direct technical merit of calculus...and yeah it's true it will help you..but you have to keep in mind this...
you brain is like a muscle in terms that you need to train it to become smart...the more you train it, the more you become smart...so calculus works some part in your brain more than say if you were doing nothing...
besides...as you go along in life..calculus itself will help you, but i truly believe that learning calculus, is just a small step into learning how to learn hard stuff...as you move along into harder discipline, you will see that this is easy stuff compared to the unknown stuff....
besides....the book you'll use in calculus will make a practical thing to throw at your dog or cat, or even that thing that holds an antique book shelf...

Calculus is the 'weed out' class for a lot of programs. Some of the better business schools make all their freshmen pass calc before they will let them into the program.

It is a fundamental and necessary class for any type of natural, physical, engineering, mathematical, or economic science field.

Don't take it because it will make you smarter. Take it because it will open doors that would otherwise be closed to you.

I took calculus this summer and It better raised my IQ. If you plan to be some type of engineer than that's a great class.
