The best answer is 'It depends.'
If you are using a UNIX system especially one like OSX, with the access ports blocked, and use a secure browser there is no access for a hacker. but if you turn on sharing, surf the Internet and open ports for ftp and Azureus, then you may be hacked.
;-) If you leave your pc running with root/admin access, and someone can sit down at it or your password is guessable, you can be hacked to pieces.

Yes.
Upon installing the OS (and other softwares) keep your computer out from:
(1) Internet.
(2) File transferring, and other communication devices.
(3) Other persons.
Then lock your room when you go out...
