When we are babies, we memorise using what is known as the 'visuo-spatial scratchpad'.- All memories in this form have to be visually based as a baby has little or no access to verbal memory systems (As it has not learned language yet). When those language systems do develop in the brain, they supercede the visuo spatial scratchpad and those memories become lost.

This happens to most of us and is a phenomenon known as 'infantile amnesia'. Verbal memory comes 'online' at any time after the age of two.

My first memory is when I was two years old. I was walking away from the hospital where my Gran was staying. I remember her waving to me from the window of her ward.

I was three years old lying in my parent's bed, and my father was teaching me how to read The Little Engine That Could. I remember thinking how difficult it was to translate the words into things I could comprehend. I remember the color of the bedpread, and that I was wearing red pajamas with feet.

I think I was two, when my sister was born and I called her a kitty as my mom insisted she was a baby. Good times, good times.
