I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau.

I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam.

However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.

Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

Depending how old you are I may require parents permission before i will do any work.

The stores wouldn't hire the models, an advertising agency would handle things for the store. They would contact a modeling agency, who would use their own people. So the trick is to be one of their people! You'll need to get a portfolio together, as people here have said. Contact a photographer (do some homework first, call agencies and ask) check with other people who have used them .. make sure the photographer isn't a 'shill' for the modeling agency. Some unscrupulous agencies are just fronts for a photographer selling portfolios. Your portfolio doesn't have to be expensive, nor does it have to be from a 'known' photographer. Many good photographers will trade pictures for a discount on a photo shoot. ie. you both do it for free, or at a good discount, with the agreement that both of you use the photos for portfolios. Photographers have portfolios of models they've shot, too! Do this with a few photographers so you get a different look and style from each one. This will show the agency that your look is versatile. The more different styles you have, the more job types you'd be qualified for. Don't sign an 'exclusive' with an agency unless they are willing to guarantee you a certain amount of work. An exclusive means that you can only work for them. If they're not getting you work, and you're not allowed to work for anyone else, you're not working at all. Height .. weight .. size.. shape.. these are all going to change a lot in the next few years, so don't get hung up on that. Nobody else will. What is important is that you have a variety of 'looks' and can change/adapt to what they need. Check around on the internet and see if you can contact any models yourself. See if they'll offer you any advice. You'd be surprised who might answer and what help they might be able to provide. Check some modeling sites and focus on a few models. See how many different looks they have. Look at outfits, backgrounds, lighting, hairstyles, props, scenery .. location shots.. take all of this into your head and see if it makes sense to you and think about how you might do it yourself, or how you might do it differently. Don't be afraid to discuss your ideas with the photographer, too. There's lots more, but I do get long winded .. sorry! Good luck!

I began a portfolio since I was 6 years old and I model for Paul Mitchell Hair, Urban Outfitters, Fabrizio Vallintini, Affiliate, and various other photographers. I got scouted by Fabrizio Vallintini who helped me get into Paul Mitchell Hair because I originally started modeling for my long hair, but as I became reognized I started for Urban and Affiliate. They pay me a good amount of money also sending me on free trips to New York to shoot with upcoming rockstars.
