A newborn must ride reclined in his rear facing car seat at a 45 degree angle. This is a must to prevent his head from flopping forward which can close off a baby's airway. After they can hold their head up well and if they are trying to sit up in their car seat, you can increase the angle to about 30 degrees. It is actually safer to ride more up right then it is reclined, so if your baby wants to sit up more and is still in an infant seat, try switching him to a convertible seat, still rear facing but installed more up right. He will sit higher and probably like it better. Alot of babies make the switch from infant seat to convertible seat between 6-8 months. Just be sure you are keeping him rear facing in his convertible seat until he reaches 1 year old AND 20 pounds, he must meet both criteria before he can face forward. This is an absolute minimum. Babies are safest staying rear facing as long as possible. Hope that helps!

babies must ride rear facing until they are 1 one year old. You can gradualy change the angle (if available on your model) as you see that your baby is creating more confidence in sitting up stright unaided. After 1 year old you can use convertible car seats froward facing up to 65 lbs. Usually the toddler years. After that you can move into a booster seat which will go up to 100 lbs on some models.
