Knowing someone who knows even a tiny bit about how to read tabs helps. Learning to read tabs is the key (try looking up some songs that you know and sound easy on ultimate guitar. I'm not sure what the url is, but I know it comes up in a Yahoo search).
Tabs are actually pretty easy to read. They show you visually exactly which strings to hold down in which frets. That gets you learning the actual chords. Strum patterns are pretty easy to decipher if you just listen closely to a song.
Learning to sing while playing is also something I'm trying to do at the moment. It helps me to figure out the chords and when the changes are, and just strum each one once while singing. Once my hands kinda start going on autopilot, I add the filler strums in.

I reccomend learning songs, either by ear or from tab. Learning from friends and other musicians helps too, but beware of the standardaized methods. There are many books and teachers that will want you to learn with boring scales and exercises, but that's not how you learn to play music. You learn to play guitar by rocking with the guitar. Also, don't be afraid to try to write stuff, even if you've never played, if you keep writing, no matter what, it improves as you keep practicing!
