My hubby and I went about six years ago. It was very interesting. When you consider that the first floor of so many buildings were just covered over and built on top of, it is amazing that anything survived down there. Sure there are a lot of homeless who used to hang out down there, but it is frozen in time. You have advertising, furniture, even a bank safe down there. Plus you can look up in spots and see the street above. In Portland, Or. there are the old "Shanghai Tunnels". They ran under bars. Unscrupulous bartenders used to aid and abet those who wanted cheap help on sailing ships. They would slip something into a guy's drink and the next thing he knew, he was tied up in the hold of a ship and taken out to sea. It was a twist on the English press gang. The tunnels were also used by the Chinese for smoking opium. Also, there used to be underground trains that ran to the different stores in downtown Portland. As a small child, I was fascinated by the blurred lights that you could see through the purple glass blocks set in the sidewalk. Now the only place where you can still see the purple glass is by the Galleria. Downtown Vancouver, Wa has "basements" that interconnect all of the old buildings.

I grew up near Seattle and lived there for several years. Never did it. I'm not sure why i missed that treasure of opportunity to take a step back to the past.
