My son has decided to wean himself at 8 months, but I still want to give him breastmilk. I looked on Ebay to buy one, but they are so expensive and even more so in the stores! Plus, I only need it for 4 more months. Anyone ever rented one? Thanks!

My son just woke up and nursed beautifully! Maybe it is a "nursing strike" after all. I had never heard of that before. I hope so, I love nursing him. I breastfed my daughter for 16 months without a hitch! He is teething though. Thanks everyone!!

It is wonderful that you still want to give your baby your milk even though he has weaned!

The maternity unit of your local hospital is a good place to ask about renting a pump.

Your local La Leche League Group will also have that information. To find an LLL Group near you, go to
http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebIndex.html
If you cannot find a Group or Leader there, contact any listing in the state you are looking for.

If your baby weaned suddenly - refused the breast - it is possible that it is only a *nursing strike.* If this is so, you may be able to get him to go back to nursing!

For more information about nursing strikes, go to

Good luck!

There are manual ones you can buy that are usually under $100. They aren't electric but they still work!

Also, I would suggest looking on the web for information about a "nursing strike". Most people agree that if a baby 'weans' before his first birthday, he isn't actually weaning, but on a nursing strike. If it is recent, and especially if it is sudden, this could be the case - you can keep trying to nurse him. This can be especially effective if you try to nurse him at night - this could get him going back. My 9 month old did this as well. It could help, and it could get him back going.

By the way - good for you for wanting him to have breastmilk!

Oh I'm so glad he nursed again! My daughter went on a 10-day strike when she was ten months. Five days of NO nursing, then five days of only nursing during naps, then right back to 20+ (yes she nurses a lot) times a day. It can be SO frustrating. Good for you for sticking it out! It might be some time yet before he is back to his regular schedule, but just be patient with him. Babies that young never wean themselves. Congrats on breastfeeding!

An electric breast pump IS great, but since you only need it for a little while, I recommend the "Avent Isis" - a hand pump. I had an electric pump for my first two children and then it gave out shortly after I had my third and last child was born. I didn't' want to invest for such a short time - knowing he'd be my last. I was skeptical, but the "Isis" worked GREAT!! I could not believe how powerful it was. The only draw back I could think of is that you can't do both sides at the same time. But it works so fast it didn't really hinder me. Good luck!

My Daughter just had the same problem, you can get them free at your Health Dept....They will let you keep it until your baby is 1 year old.....Another thing, Babies just don't wean them selves at 8 months old, He is probaly on strike, Was he sick lately...sore throat.....or for no reason at all they can go on strike, My Daughters baby did this for 2 weeks and all of a sudden she went right back to the breast, Keep offering the breast to him, when he takes a nap, lay down with him and offer it.....just be patient, My Daughter was about ready to give up and all of a sudden the baby took to nursing again.....Don't give up.....your baby still needs you...

Check the state health dept. They sometimes rent for free. Also check the local La Leche League, they can give you that info.

When i rented it cost about $40 a month with an equivalent deposit that they returned.

hospitals rent out sterlized pumps if you want one... but before you go ahead....my son did a similar thing....i'm going to wean myself thing...that age...learning..to crawl--teething eating some solids...doesn't necessarily mean he is weaning...he may be just going through a stage....my son did that stage I stuck it out...and i kept nursing.. and it sure is nice not to do the bottle thing...

I bought one for $40. I think it will pay for itself, I don't see how renting one would be cheaper than that. Not to mention you might have another baby eventually, and you will have it on hand.

good luck!

YOUR LOCAL HEALTH UNIT RENTS THEM OUT ALOT OF TIMES FOR FREE. OR I PAID ABOUT $ 40 FOR A SMALL ONE AT WALMART I THINK. BIG ENOUGH TO PUMP SEVERAL TIMES A DAY.

I think it would be cheaper to buy one. Besides that's not something you'd want to rent. Is it?
