Other primates have prominent breasts, sometimes.

When the female is nursing, and when she is sexually receptive.

The permanently swollen breasts of human females are a substitute for displays on primate posteriors that were obscured by the shift in posture. Humans out turned lips are another.

It's also speculated that it served to insure constant male attention to help with child rearing and securing the material means to insure high fertility, by forcing males to stay close and on good terms with females to assure they got to sire children.

The obvious fertility displays in primate females has led to what amounts to rape as a reproductive strategy in males that females would otherwise refuse due to their youth and or unimpressive stature.

Puts the whole 'hard to run with these things' bit in perspective don't it?

The reason full breasts developed in our species is an indirect result of the pair bonding process that sets us apart from other primates.

Take a look at other primates and you'll notice they all copulate in a similar manner. In many primates the female will display her genitals or--if she has them--buttocks to the male. The male will then mount her from behind. The two hemispheres of the buttocks were a strong sexual signal for our antecedent species.

Back to pair bonding. We recognize members of our species primarily by the shape and arrangement of their faces. So in order to pair bond with our mates we have to see their faces, and as pair bonding is, first and foremost, a result of sexual contact, our great (to the nth power) grandparents needed to see each others faces while copulating.

Unfortunately granny's hindquarters were her primary signaling device and granddad couldn't pull himself away from those two hemispheres of fatty tissue. So nature found a workaround, get some sex signaling hemispherical devices on the front side, where the face was.

That is why human breasts are the way they are.

That's also why we have color delineated lips and many other features. If you're interested in learning more about this check my source.

Visual attraction for males. According to the TV series "The Human Animal", women have enlarged breasts all of the time to attract a mate. So men DON'T want to hear women whining about men looking at their boobs instead of their eyes. They should hide their boobs then.

All mammals have mammary glands to feed their young with, and some primmates do have breasts. I am not sure the whole reason, but then again, why do birds fly, have beaks, why do people have hair...yada yada yada...who really cares?
