I really would like to get an iPod, but I'm afraid to damage my hearing, or that it will break, or those other paranoias (sp?) What are your opinions on them?

i checked out and tried various mp3 players on the market and couldn't really settle on one..then won a free ipod. i love it...but i also love that it was free and think if it had not been i probably would not have bought one, though for the record i probably would have just decided not buy any at all, mostly due to cost versus my listening habits.
with that said...anything that produces sound can damage your hearing. just don't pump the volume all the way up with the headphones on. i have an older ipod photo with a harddrive in it before they switched over to the flash based, and as far as damage goes, mine has taken a few very nasty falls, including one where it flew half way across the room and its still working fine. i did manage to scratch the screen but it was more my own fault i feel rather than being a defect, i had put it in a side pocket full of loose change, lots of keys, and various other little jabby things. since i've stopped keeping it in the same pocket with my keys i haven't had a problem, though if i bought a case that might fix that problem as well.
its also fun to tinker around with like with putting linux on it.
other players i tried have had fairly clunky navigation and the ipod was so straight forward i didn't need a manual at all...and the irivers i found to be a downright nightmare to use.
my battery life is also still going very strong.
so i would recommend the ipods, though they can be costly, so you might want to really consider when and how much it will get used, as i realized i was more wanting a mp3 player just to have one.
my biggest complaint about it is i would have liked an external volume control, but even that isn't quite enough for me to recommend against them...and many alternatives lack that as well.

I have an ipod and like it. I thought i would use it more but the only time i use it is when i workout or walk to class. It was nice having it when i was on vacation i listened to it on the plane. The ipod also plays movies, can hold your pictures, and tv shows. So yea i would get one if you have the money.

You do not need a 30GB ipod which holds 15,000 songs ($15,000 worth of music). You would be better with a Nano. Also research the Creative labs Zen. Go to crutchfeild.com.

Do you have so many songs you need a 30 mb...try a smaller one. I bought a RCA Lyra...4gb...129...and it will hold about 1000 songs.

the MB don't damage your hearing......... if thats what you meant.
there is software that you can download from itunes that prevents you from turning your iPod too loud.
