Pretty simple:
1) Don't call our elected officials names. We voted them in and a minority get to undermine them? I don't think that is support of the system of government we use, do you? Use their proper titles until they lose them.
2) Don't spread unfounded rumors and treat our officials as "guilty until proven innocent". That is definitely NOT a United States value. Doing it to other people? We'll, it's not ethical, but it has nothing to do with Patriotism, either. When you undermine our elected representatives, you undermine us. WE ARE the government.
3) Don't undermine our Bill of Rights. We have free speech. Nothing I have said undermines number 1 and 2 above, and they are still free speech. They are also seditious. Their name-calling and lies are protected, but are NOT patriotic.
4) Fight for the betterment of your country. Like President Bush AND President Clinton said, "All the Presidents have been good men, trying their best to help their country and it's people; they just disagree on how." One of my growing friendships on line is with a man who is often seditious. I am a U.S.A. citizen first, and other things, second.
5) A Patriot recognizes what the United States of America is greatest at, above all other nations: finding and welcoming the very best of other cultures, peoples, religions, etc., around the world, and making it ours as well as theirs. We adopt cultural changes so fast that a man from the Middle-Ages would go through culture shock every three years, even sitting in the same neighborhood in one of cities for the entire time! We are NOT BETTER than other nations. We are better at many things. The things we aren't better at? We're looking at them... . It is not patriotism to pretend we are innately better. That's just blindness.

6) We see each other. Joining the seditious in their hatred of other Americans is not Patriotic. Oh, we'll face them, we might even call their actions traitorous, but we'll always see the man or women they might have been. We'll always welcome them back when they show they've changed. We made Japan, Germany, and Italy ALLIES after the last WW! That makes us U.S.A. Patriots. Would that all countries had them. There'd be less revolution and more democracy in the world.

Oh, and if I missed something, let me know. The willingness to learn from our mistakes isn't exactly a sign of patriotism, but it is sure something the U.S.A. is good at!

Why assume that there is such a thing as a "true American" or a "true patriot"? Look at history instead and you will see that there have been and will continue to be a variety of Americans and a variety of patriots--none truer than the next, but all very real.

Early in US history a patriot was one who was willing to sacrifice greatly for the benefit of fellow Americans. So, giving up reliance on oil, might be the way we could be a Patriot.

It seems like lately Patriotism is more like a religion where no matter what, americans are like the superior race and everyone else is stupid.
Personally,I think that although one should love their county, part of patriotism is accepting other's beliefs and cultures.

Someone who will defend America from anyone who wants to change it,

But will fight to change it when nobody wants to defend it.

It is the careful balance between right and wrong, and the difference between truth and deceit.

An American is anyone who would run into their neighbor's burning house, anyone who blocks the hurt from someone who can't take it anymore, and puts the bad guys in their place.

I love America, and I believe anyone can be an American!
