It really depends on the type of tower, but most of the time, it is assembled on site, andhoists and cranes are used to help lift the segments to their places. If the tower is really tall, or is in a place that is subjected to high winds, it is held in place by guy wires.

One thing you cannot be when working in antenna maintenance is afraid of heights. I had to climb a 300' tower in Essex to place a satellite receiver dish for our squadron. I could see clear to the North Sea, but I could also feel the tower swaying under me. Scary...

Depends on the height of the tower and the structure itself. Some towers are free standing while others require guys. Usually towers that are in sections are assembled section on top of section and each new section hoisted up with a gin pole device that people on the ground (grunts) use to pull the new section up high and a person on the tower (brave fool) then bolts the new section into place. A smart person will then secure the tower at various intervals with guy wires to keep the tower secure as they continue to raise it. Other towers that are multi-section telescoping are often put into place from the ground and are self standing but heights are restricted. The total or maximum height is mostly determined by the type of material the tower is made of and the gauge of that material. Some commercial towers are erected with the help of a crane. It all depends on what you want to use the tower for and how large it is.
