the guinea pig is in it now and he doesn't escape but i didn't know if that would work for a rat? the cage is a large square that has large enough sqaures that it wouldn't be able to climb out!

It would be better to have a secure enclosure like a ferret cage, something a little larger for the rat, and make sure it has a secure top or door latches. They can get out quite easily, and can jump too!! Be sure to have some cardboard down over the wire cage bottom so he doesn't get what is called "bumblefoot", sores on his feet from having to walk around in the wire cage.

hmmmmmm...... Do you really want a rat? I think that it may likely escape. my hamsters climb a little bit in the cage they are in. They might be able to answer that question at the pet store.

They are perfect escape artist. And in some cases Ive seen them jump from a stand still almost 5 feet in the air.

I don't think so. Rats have the ability to squeeze through spaces as small as a penny so I don't think this will keep it in. They also can climb better than guinnea pigs.

No rats are natural climbers so a cage without a top will not be secure.

That cage needs a top..every rattie I ever had was an escape artist!!!!

I wouldn't suggest it....I had Rats. They climb up everything

it will get out if you dont have a secure top on the cage. secure = wire screen and clips to hold it
