You need one for any hope of deduction. You should have gotten a form in the hospital to fill out to request one. If you didn't, you can go to a local social security office and get one. You will need their birth certificate, and your proof of identification, and they will issue one to the newborn.
I completed the form in the hospital the day after my daughter was born, and 2 months later, I got her card in the mail.
Hope this helps!

a social security card is usually issed after a birth certificate is established. It comes in the mail after the birth cerificate which is about 6-8 weeks.
If you need proof if it for something see if you get something form your social security administration stating that an application for a social security card has been made.
But if the birth certificate is not made yet, the social secuirty office won't have the application. YOu have to be acknowledged as a person before you can get a social security card.
If the baby is a newborn you won't need the social for last year's taxes. There is nothing you can claim ( other than 2005 medical bills) in 2005 taxes that happended in 2006.
Most agencies will give you time to get your legal documents.
If you don't get it in about 8 weeks contact your social security office. I live in PA and our application is sent not by us.

You need to get one as soon as possible for tax reasons. There is a grace period, but it's a good idea to apply for it as soon as you can. This way you won't have a problem getting the tax credit for your child. I'm not sure what the grace period is, you can probably call the IRS or check their website for details.

Yes, if you plan on getting a tax deduction from the IRS. Their number has to be put on the tax form.

yep... as soon as you can. If I remember correctly, a few years ago they started requiring ss number on tax returns. So if you want that deduction + the child credit, you need to get one.
track ya from cradle to grave they do
