Well, the most RECENT reason is because Hezbollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers, when Israel did nothing to them.
Hizbollah is a terrorist organization. Then when Israel started defending itself, Hizbollah bombs northern Israel. Since Israel knows Hizbollah gets its weapons from Iran and Syria, they bombed the air port and other terrorist areas to prevent more weapons from coming in, and to destroy whatever bombs are still there, and to kill the terrorists. Whereas Hizbollah and Hamas only bomb to kill civilians, Israel actually intelligently targets ONLY terrorist areas, and TRIES NOT to kill innocent civilians. Before Israel bombs an area, they let out papers from the airplanes that warns the civillians, and tell them to not stay in that area because it will be bombed soon. (That EVEN let;s the terrorists go free!)

Since Hizbollah is a terrorist organization in Lebanon, it seems like Israel and Lebanon are in war, but it's really Israel and Hizbollah(and Hamas: another terrorist org). And yes Israel is bombing Lebanon, but Lebanon is not doing ANYTHING about Hezbollah. Lebanon was suppoused to disarm Hizbollah a long time ago (a UN resolution), but they never did. Plus they are an Arab country, and Arabs hate Israel. They claim Israel is their land when it cleary is not.

You should read the history of Israel. Check out this guys answer: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=Ao2z34nDge.Q6Zj_JhqnILwjzKIX?qid=1006050911582

And my source is the bible. It doesn't matter if you believe in the bible or not, but the fact that it was written so long ago and gives FACTS about Israel is my point.

In short. Lebanon has a weak government that has virtually no control over it's southern border region. The terrorist group Hezbollah controls the area and for years would launch rockets into Israel. For almost 2 decades, the israeli army occupied what they called a buffer zone in this area to prevent attacks but it didn't work and some say, just inspired more attacks. Israel now contends that lebanon should do more to patrol this border and is taking matters into it's own hands to try and destroy hezbollah once and for all. The incident that started this conflict is the abduction of two israeli soldiers by hezbollah militants.

Because Lebanon is a country that has been promoting terrorist activities for a long time. Granted this is just a continuation of thousands of years of fighting as the other answerers said, but the reason they are at war is because Israel borders lebanon and can't allow people to live next to them who wish them dead. No matter who's right about religion or politics everyone has a right to try to protect itself. The Hezbollah can't be fought directly, terrorist groups like them will continue to exist as long as countries allow and promote their activities.

Lebanon is not at war. Hezbollah is a group of anti-government radicals inside of Lebanon. Consequently, they are also anti-Israeli.

In my opinion, it is more of a power struggle between the two regions. One side thinks that its way is right and visa versa. No one really knows why anyone actually opts to go to war instead of talking it out, but I guess when either or both sides is irrational, something has to be done. How would you handle it?
