I think his idiotic stance has driven great scientists to search for other venues in which to conduct research. Geez, what a boob. I'm never voting for a fundamentalist christian. Brownback, pay attention, moron!

Sugar Dumplin, darlin. Pay attention, sweetie. When your loved one is incapacitated by paralysis, and you can't do anything about it, it makes you pretty darned angry that Bush the Boob is vetoing progress. Did you follow that, honey?

I'm thinking more on the optimistic side.
After Bush is done, I'm hoping the religious right will look so bad science will get more respect in the popular culture.

For your info, that's a logical fallacy, called appealing to emotion. Anyway... no, it has not demonstrated that to the world, since most of the world is probably not so stupid as to think that we can experiment on human life.

Okay Okay....I dunno if we can really say the US can't lead in science anymore. Stem cells are a very important issue and have wonderful potential. They are also very risky and probably arnt a silver bullet.

Should we be trying to figure out if they are??? Absolutely. Of course. Makes no sense to just throw them out.

But stem cells arnt everything. Gene therapy. Viral therapy. And just good basic research is still light years ahead of the rest of the world. We have a lot more infrustructure. People from all over the world come here to get advanced degrees in all kinds of science.

What we should pay attention too is that the US might not lead the world forever. We need to stay on the cutting edge because research is not easy. You're talking about billions of dollars and decades of research just to learn about disease.

And public research funded by the NIH is the best. When you turn research to private industry...sure you find treatments....but rarely cures. No money in cures.

The US must continue to lead the world because nobody else is even close.

For the past 8 years U.S has lost the battle with being the best in terms of Science. It is not just because of Mr. President but also because of rapid change in culture. We don't care who invented computers or who invented pennicilin but we need to know who Brad pitt is married to.

I think it is a combination of the lack of interest from the president and his committee but also the citizens. Only 28% PEOPLE GO TO COLLEGE HERE..not graduate but go to college. With statistic like that U.S cannot expect to be #1 in terms of Science.

It is true that U.S is also losing some of it's best scientists..and they are all going to Germany and Switzerland. I want to research in the future and hopefully U.S will pucker up and put some money into research.

I don't understand the problem of ethics because:
1. This administration just went into a country and they are killing innocent people...so where are morals now?
2. Every minute someone dies from cancer and where are morals now?

We have so much now in terms of innovations and that is because there was not much restriction in the past in this country with so much potential.

So, how things get better and Mr.President changes his mind in the 2 years that is left or we get a new President who is for research overall and stem cells research.

So, good question.

The number of men getting college degrees is in a free fall because we don't think raising a boy without a father is putting the child at risk.
We have poured more money down the drain for the Iraq war than we have for all scientific research this millennium. (With no weapons of mass destruction found).
We have budget deficit that will weaken our economy to the point we can't afford to even fund the scientific research.
The stem cell stupidity is pale compared to all these other signs we are doomed to become hasbeens in scientific research.

It's not just Bush's stance on stem cells that has put our position in science research this far down the list .... It is the way we view whats important...TV, Music, Sports, etc..
The equal value is not there for education, we let visual stimulating or amusement take the stress off of us from actually raising our children in an engaging environment......the word amusement ever think about it....A-non,not, absence of,..... to muse- to think...amusement ..???? something that keeps us from thinking.....
Don't blame the worlds and our countries problems on a single person...regardless of how much you think they deserve your scorn....the issues are connected to the way America lives....each of us is responsible for the way our country has been run for along time now....
American science is lacking Americans because we don't emphasize the importance of devoting our lives to actual goals, unless those goals are attached to large dollar amounts and a life of easy....life isn't about the pleasure Americans consistently pursue, it is working toward significant achievement, even if that achievement is your children's education being the highest priority that yours and their young lives can hope for....there may be nothing more...

i voted for bush and now wish i didn't, i have 4 people die in my family that would have benefited from it, i know were still a ways before we can use stem cells, but bush is just stalling it, 75% of americans want stem cell research, but he refuses to listen to what the majority wants. what if my mom or me or my future kids get sick, i sure hope we can move one and find a cure.
