Oh i never know potato has a heart shape. The common one that i see is a long and cylindrical in shape. To prevent potato from going rotten, firstly separate those good from the bad ones (avoid break and bruises, there are sign of rot). Store your potatoes in anything that allows air to circulate.
If possible, store in a dark, humid place at around 40 degrees for maximum storage life (at this temperature they can last as long as the entire winter). They should be kept in the dark because light contributes to greening. Don't wash them until you're ready to use them--a buildup of moisture encourages decay. And don't store potatoes next to onions or apples--they each exude a gas that shortens the life of the other.
Hope these infos help!!

Yeah in a dark, cool place! Also make sure it's not near onions because that speeds up the rotting process!

You could put it in a baggie and freeze it. It won't rot that way, but it might not taste good after a while.

peal cut up and drop in boiling water for a few seconds and then in a freezer bag and stick it in the freezer. When you want it drop in boiling water again and mash it.
Or if you have a dehydrator, cut in slices and dehydrate.
A heart, no!
