i run a repair shop and i have seen some in my shop for overheating,,but the real cause of it was the head gasket,s seem to be weak on these car,s,,if they ever get a little hot,,and there a little low on coolant,,it seem,s to get the head gasket,,every time,,as for a fix we always have the head milled down a little,,to make sure it is true,,and use a better gasket than what came on it,,and this seem,s to take care of it,,i have done about 6 of them already this year,,and expect to get a few more before the summer is over with,,i hope this help,s you some.

When I read your question, I sighed. Grand Ams , my dear , are pieces of CRAP!!!! I had a 2002 that had computer starter problems. I would take it in to the dealership, they would fix it , and then send me on my way, only to have it break down 2 or 3 months later. I went through this twelve times, while this piece of crap left me stranded with four kids on the side of the road!!! I had to get Triple A (AAA) so I could be towed all the time. I finally actually let them repo it, and I will probably be paying for this for the rest of my life. A friend of mine has a 1999 Grand Am, and hers does not overheat, but it gives her trouble all the time. Pontiacs are good to look at and sporty, but not worth the metal they are made with. I am so sorry you are having this trouble.

just like what the last guy said, the gaskets on these motors SUCK. thats the one thing i hate about the grand am. if you are around 75k miles, and have not had to replace your head, or lower intake manifold gaskets, chances are you need too. also if thats not the case, try a coolant flush. your suppose to do that once a year, and most people do not. coolant will loose its cooling power over time.

hope this helps

most Gm vehicles have problems with the intake gaskets causing them to leak anitfreeze into the motor. Especially the 3100 and 3400 engine.
