They are smart, it's just in a totally different way than people are.
We're predators like dogs and cats, so they are easier to understand for us.
But horses have their own ways of surviving, and many of the things that keep them alive in the wild don't work well and look dumb in captivity. For instance, work horses used to run back into a burning barn- the barn was the only safe place for a horse who slogged the streets all day, and that was the only place they could feel safe. Just like a little kid hiding in the closet from a fire, really.
Horses are a lot like little kids, they reason pretty well but often act on instinct. My horse I had from birth knew a ton of words,
the basics, walk, trot, over, load up, let's go, stand, wait- and then she also knew words like my fault, last time, and manners please!

Some are as dumb as rocks. Others are smarter than a lot of people I know.
Some of them are pretty silly and get scared at stupid things, but it's nice to help them get over their fears.
It varies. They have a lot of individual characteristics. I've known mean ones, stubborn ones, sneaky ones, lazy ones and sweet, friendly ones. Once I rode a really good cutting horse and we worked together seamlessly as a team - that was really something.
I love horses.

No, I don't think they're dumb at all.
Horses are extraordinarily sensitive creatures. Watch the Horse Whisperer.

rather, sure, yet my oh my might I hate to could look after that distinctive horse. With a tail as long as that his grooming habitual probable takes 2 hours on a daily basis, and you will wager that undesirable horse gets possibly an hour of turn-out an afternoon if he's fortunate.

this is such a common thing that people believe! horses are SO very smart it's a little freaky! they are just QUIET-smart! if you ever own a horse, you'll totally see what i mean. if your horse doesn't listen when you tell him something, it's only because he chose not to!

No of course not, if they can figure out why someone is on their back, and then figure out how to jump obstacles, and figure out how to do complicated Dressage moves, then they are extremely smart. Smarter than a lot of people i know anyway!
