Ihave been watching a game on late night T.V and am totaly confused why do the players wear eye make up and what do phrases like 1st and 10 mean? I suspect the rules are very complex and it would be simpler to get a book from the library

When I came to the USA, I didn't know anything about American football. But, unlike the Americans, who call soccer a boring game for sissies, without knowing anything about it ( Just the ignorants do that ) I tried to understand it. And I did after a little while. I can tell you that it is an interesting and intense game. Whe the offense gets the ball, they have 4 plays to advance the ball 10 yards, otherwise the other team gets the ball. They usually run just three plays and, if they didn't advance the ball the 10 yards, they punt, to make the other team start their offense farther back. First means that is the first play of the offense and ten, that's the distance they have to make to keep the ball. Third and two, for example, it is the third play and need to gain two yards to keep going.By all means, get a book. The game is worth the effort. Baseball it is even more complex, but I love it. I didn't know anything about it either.

No, not at all! I can help answer some of those questions since I was born during a Monday Night Football game and have always loved the sport.
It's not eye makeup but some sort of stuff like shoe polish that deflects the sun's rays so the sun isn't in a player's eyes.
1st and 10 means that the football has hit the ground - making that a first down - and that there are ten more yards until the next first down.

NO!!
I came from Argentina to the US 2 1/2 years ago and at first I hated football so badly that I couldn't stand it. But then, when Joe Gibbs came back to the Redskins, a friend told me he was the Redskins 'hero' so I started checking the scores after the games (6-10 that season). Then last season ... everyone in my school started talking about the 14-13 to Dallas (2nd game of the season:D) so I started paying more attention to it. I started watching Redskins games and started understanding the complexity of it. I understood only the basics at first (like 4 downs ... stuff like it) but I didn't have any idea about the positions, fumbles, penalties. So around January 2006, when the Skins were headed to the playoffs I decided to buy Madden 2005 for only 8 bucks and I started playin' it like crazy ... and through that game I learned so much about football that now I can't wait anymore for the season. I started watching all "Game Of the Week" replays in NFL Network and started following NFL Europe cuz I jus wanted to see more games.
So yes, we foreigners can also understand football!;)

The make up is suppose to help with glare for lighting as well as make them look mean.
1st and 10 mean that they have 3 tries to move the ball 10 yards for a 1st down.
Keep watching and look for an american football faq on the web

Ha. That's not eye makeup. Now adays, it's a patch that keep sweat from forming around the eye.
1st and ten refers to the series' down (of which there are four), and the number of yards to get the next series of downs (10 yards to go).
The best way to learn American Football is to watch with someone who knows the game. I learned from watching with my father.
It would be rather bland from a book.

No, everyone can enjoy it
You can learn it by watching it
Eye make is used because the Sun reflects with the glow of your skin and with the black line it doesn't
You have to advance to the other end of the field:
You got to try to run or throw the ball until you advance 10 yds
You got four chances to deserve a 1st and 10 and so on until you score

I live in England and there are a lot of English men that not only understand it but play it. FYI American football and soccer actually came from the same game.

Certinatly not! I'm a fellow Englishman into Amercian football, and invite you to join us all at NFLUK.COM (I'm Lagunium there as well, feel free to PM me if you join the forum) - we have quite a big following, and meet up for a superbowl party on the night of the event itself - there's also full explanations in there.
The game appears complex at first, and is subtle, but magnificient once you understand it.

No, you don't have to be an American to understand it. Kindly ignore some of the morons above whose only contribution is to disparage one of the greatest games. And rednecks only understand NASCAR.
The rules aren't that complex, as others have noted. And the eye black is to stop the sun's rays from reflecting off of your cheek bone and blinding you.

No, you don't have to be American to understand American Football. All you need to do is watch the game and pay attention and you can easily figure it out. I'm a woman and I know about football.
