No it will not happen.

For government to function as a servant of the people it must be close to the people. A small example, in my State there are 99 counties and therefore 99 county governments. A few years ago a study was done from which issued a proposal to merge some of those counties because they were small in numbers of population and merging them would be more efficient.

Thankfully this proposal came to naught, because being efficient is not the reason to have government, it is meant to represent the people and to be close to the people. In addition the cultures in these counties are quite diverse and their (close to the people) government reflects that diversity. Merged governments would not reflect that diversity.

I believe that the nations (various cultures) of the world reflect a similar situation, one that will never change.

Essentially, right now we do have a world government in the form of the United Nations. However, they lack the true power/authority to enforce any legislation.

A world government could work. I think the best situation would be if it were set up with three branches like the US government with the checks and balances system. We'd need a world court (much like the US Supreme Court), a world senate with two representatives from each country, a world house of representatives with the number of reps based on each country's census and a president.

I don't think it would be bad. Although, the potential for dangerous situations would be there.

Inevitable, given enough time, because (1) communication has effectively shrunken the world (2) our most serious problems pay no respect to national boundaries.

What would it be like?
A wide spectrum of possibilities, from a true Federal system to something distinctly repressive.

There will always be politics, always be adversarial opinions, but as with federal nation states, the need to resort to open warfare over those differences would be vastly reduced, and the vast sums invested in offensive and defensive armaments could be put to productive use.

The problem with one world government is what it "could" be like. If it turned tyrannical and aggresive, who is going to help the citizens of the world out.

As it stands now, the existence several countries serves as a defense mechanism against global dominatin by any one government.

I am an unabashed nationalist American and will fight to the death any attempted imposition of a foreign authority over me.

Having one worldwide government is certainly POSSIBLE, but it is highly IMPROBABLE.

I think that it'd be great to have a one-world government, and I'm quite optimistic that it would be designed well. It would have a well-designed statement of human rights. Judges would be the most important decision-makers.

in five billion years the sun will run out of fuel and expand to twice the size it is now. effectly ending all life on planet earth. But how about 500 years from now. more than likely there will be some sort of effective central Gov. in place, kind of like the EUR union.

maybe, but a lot of gready politions won't give their seats or governments up freely that I can assure you. And I'm not sure the new one would reduce the tax rate from the savings we would create from this either.

No...

But we would all wear lycra jumpsuits, except for the subversive underground movement trying to overthrow the corrupt, single government

Read the "Left Behind" series. Though it is fiction with biblical truths they are really gripping to read and also entertaining. I enjoyed reading all of them so far and it makes you think after reading them that that is where we are heading but not in my lifetime or yours. But possible according to the bible.
