Ford Crown Victoria till model year 2003 had a similar problem. Its gas tank would explode when it was hit real hard from behind due to the poorly designed location. There was about 17 cases I believe of this is happening in the past 20 years or so, mostly with police cars (high risk car chases and all), which lead to lawsuit charges, which in turn were dropped due to the Ford's strong monopoly on highway patrol vehicles.
