since most black where taken from western africa but grouped with others slaves of different languages to keep them from communicating and organizing a revolt. their 'travels' brought them to all parts of the caribean and south america, and the southern united states. once arriving to these countries, and with no access to education, the slaves as best as possible, adopted the language of the locale. in the usa, during the 17 and 18th century, it is likely they spoke broken versions of french (creole), spanish, and english. that would also depend on the language of the planation they were kept.

The newest slaves carried their native tounge, but usage of this diminished once they were in America. The American-born slaves spoke English.
