If this is true for either heat or air, then check for a disconnected or broken vacuum line under the hood around the intake manifold or possibly the firewall. This is particularly suspect if there has been some recent underhood service or repairs done at about the time you noticed this problem. Be also suspicious under the dash if that was recently disturbed.

The Batty Professor hit the nail on the head with his answer.
That system is designed to default to defrost position when a loss of vacuum occurs.
Find the evaporator box under the hood on passenger side firewall. Ford (as well as others) uses a vacuum line from the engine to provide vacuum to the control head. Look around that area for any broken vacuum lines. These can get unhooked or become brittle and break from engine heat and age.
Good luck!

The default position in case of a HVAC malfunction is defrost, so that if a failure occurs it will still defrost the windshield no matter what. You either have a vacuum leak in the HVAC system, or a malfunctioning actuator, or selector switch. There can also be a damaged air door inside the heater case. You may want to have it looked by an experienced technician.

Either motor controlled damper or vaccum controlled damper. The motor assemblies tend to break gears. The vaccum controlled systems tend to get the hose pulled off when someone puts in or removes a stereo. Good luck.

suspect a vacuum leak . must ask do the other modes work ?properly, how about during acceleration ?, if answers are no and no suspect main vac supply at manifold, if yes and no suspect bad check valve at vac storage canister or cracked canister [black plastic ball with black and white hoses attached] if all other modes work even during acceleration suspect bad servo for a/c- defrost duct
