Ok here it goes, this is what I did with a 5 yr old laptop and it runs great!
First off, run a disk cleanup. This is located under start > all programs > accesories > system tools > disk cleanup.
After that, buy antispyware and antivirus tools. If you want something for free, try adaware from lavasoft for an antispyware and run the free panda online scan. Adaware should help you remove all unnecessary/spam/spyware programs and it's quite effective.
After you have run both of these, do a disk defragment. This is under start > all programs > accesories > system tools > disk defragment.
Then, another option is to remove all the start up programs. Go to start > run > msconfig. On the start up tab, click remove all or uncheck all programs and processes. Don't worry, all necessary programs will still run, windows is programmed not to terminate any processes needed to function.
All this should help you a lot. But, if you're willing to go the extra mile and spend a little money, you can go to the kingston RAM webpage and buy another memory module for your PC. They have very affordable memory in the ValueRam section.
Hope this helps you!

Looks like you have a lot of Adware/Spyware or viruses on your pc.
Here are some simple things you can do. Uninstall all unnecessary programs from your computer.
1.Install a good antivirus program such as McAfee antivirus (for me McAfee 2005 version works better than Norton antivirus). Run the antivirus and see what happens.
2. Install a spyware/adware removal utility (I use Ad-Aware SE but there are better programs also). Run the spyware removal program. It will remove a lot of things.
3. Upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2. Use the one with the built in SP2. It is far better than the earlier versions of Windows.
If you still have a problem then format your hard disk and install a fresh copy of Windows XP with built in SP2. Then install McAfee antivirus and spyware/adware removal utilities and update their virus definitions(this is important). This should solve the problem.
This seems difficult but this is the easy way out. Troubleshooting is difficult and requires a lot of computer knowledge.

If you want to make your computer to be very basic, then here are some solutions:
(1) Uninstall unnecessary programs. Go to control panel, Add/Remove programs.
(2) Clean your registry - Registry Mechanic - (ask me re. keys)
(3) Install antivirus - ANTIVIR. The one I'm using.
(4) If your system still run very slow then, your last resort REALLY is clean your hard disk by format. But don't do if you didn't done this before because it needs all the necessary drivers/softwares. What I recommend is buy a cheap hard disk then remove your old and install the new one. Start install every softwares the only things you need. And then, you have the FRESH system!
The last one is what I'm doing if my system gets slow.

Ok. Right click on task bar and go to windows task manager. select processes tab.
Ok, most system processes are fine (under username), click on cpu, so it sorts from hi to lo. System idle process is fine. From here down, if something looks like it shouldn't be running, select it and click end process button. If you notice a difference in performance, then that is probably it. So do a search for the file.exe (using search), and go to start, control panel, add/remove and remove the application.
You can also download programs to do this for you.
Also, if the problem is with explorer.exe, you may need to reformat and reinstall windows (do this if nothing else works)
hope this helps.

Tough question. It would help if you had someone look at it. Do a CTRL+ALT+DELETE...go into Task Manager...see if any process is taking a lot of memory. Usually if it is not a system process, then you might be able to kill it.
Best is to reformat your hard drive and start all over again.
