With $600 things may be a bit tight, depending on how much you party. Some money savers-
It's a great city to grab a snack, Dim Sum in chinatown, bakeries. Plan on these type things rather than a lot of restaurant dining there are some reasonable places (Blue Front Cafe in the Haight) and other smaller local cafe style places. Nice dinners out can be expensive (Swan Oyster Depot if you want seafood for less than $40-50). Sushi is reasonable too. Tu'Lan on 6th south of Market is a hole in the wall Vietnamese place- but the food is good and plentiful
Get a bus pass when you get here, they sell multi day passes for less than you'll pay on the busses. I believe they sell them at the Powell Street station Tourist Information Office. You can get all over the city with busses.
If you are here the first Tuesday of the month - Museums are free - The Legion of Honor is free every Tuesday.
Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket - you will need both. Oh and you'll be tired after your day on Alcatraz. Have a great time.

when you go to Alcatraz take the boat trip around the bay - goes out under the Golden Gate and back to the Oakland bridge before it docks. Not much left of Alcatraz. At pier 39 there is an aquarium that you walk thru like a tube. Shows the fish life in the bay - pretty cool got some good sized sharks in it. Ther is an excellent Italian sidewalk cafea block or two to the west of the pier. Good pasta dishes and wines. Good lunch opportunity. China town is a must use it for a dinner trip and cruise the sidewalks in the evening. Rent a car and take a day trip south on the Carmel Penninsula. Do you play golf? Pebble Beach.
See a Baseball game , go clubbing, and eat eat eat!

There are all sorts of things you can do, it depends on what you like. You can get quite a show just walking around the city. There are a bunch of free events, see link below. The shows are great, Beach Blanket Babylon is a hoot. The food is wonderful, check out Zagats guide for rating info. Have fun!
