At the 2004 Short Course World Championships, Rowdy Gaines said that the 400 IM and the 200 Fly are the hardest events. I was wondering what other events require endurance like the 400IM and 200Fly?

I would agree with Rowdy, that the 400IM and 200 Fly are the hardest events. If I had to suggest another event, I would say the 1650(the mile) or the 500 Freestyle. The mile is your longest event, and the best swimmers are holding tremendously fast times per 100(every 4 laps) for 66 laps. Quite impressive. The 500 requires endurance, but on a lesser scale than the mile. I competed in the 400IM, 200FLY and mile in college, and I must say, I was in good shape and had a lot of endurance! Those events can wipe you out..

The 200 Fly is a major suckfest. The IMs also blow because they work every stroke, thus more muscles are affected. The longer races are a whole different beast. After a while, you get into what I call "the groove", and the endorphins are pumping, and well, while you're still swimming your brains out, it isn't too bad. The shorter events like the 200 Fly have no groove, it just sucks.

The 1650 is the longest race, but I agree with Gaines. I'd swim a 1650 any day over the 400 IM. Because butterfly and breaststroke take so much more energy than freestyle, you have to be in much better shape and it takes a lot more endurance.

Goodness, i agree with Gaines. 200 Fly and 400 IM kill
I guess it just depends on your strenghts and what not...like if you're a distance freestyler, the 1650 might not be as killer for you as it would be for somebody thats a sprinter....

I think that most IMs are difficult because you get pretty tired after fly. I also think the 200 fly is easier than the 100 because you have to sprint the 100.

i have to swim the 200 breast/400 im double at alot of meets with only 15-20 mins inbetween, and that is the toughest double in swimming as far as legs go. doing it twice prelims/finals only adds to the pain.. no matter how much you warm down, the next day your legs are shot!
