absolutely. i have a friend in china and she has been harrassed numerous times by the powers that be for her faith & she personally knows numerous church members who have been jailed.
i hear the persecution in sudan is rather fierce/deadly as well as in some muslim countries (such as Afghanistan where the man was put on trial for becoming a Christian).

No more than other religions. Just because some people can't get their way they cry persecution.
