"its not you, its me" will only antagonize your partner further. so the best thing you might wanna try is just to sit down and talk to him about things.
tell him your plans (ie: to continue with the relationship and you both try REALLY hard to make things work and make sparks fly again) or that you want to end this relationship now cuz you respect the love for him too much to mislead him into spending 20 years of his life thinking that you two are in love.
after talking, you might be surprised to find that he thinks the same as you do? (that is only if you are lucky)
just don't make a lists of what irritates you about him, you are ditching the poor guy, make it as diplomatic and as less drama as possible. he ( as a person) do not deserve it.....
good luck honey! regards.

You have to be completely honest and it is going to be very hard. My mother had to explain that to my father and they were married for 22 years and she was never "in love" with him. He's going to be hurt and confused so you need to be gentle and understanding and it will be hard b/c he may not want to be nice to you and he may say hurtful things and be distrusting or accuse you of having someone elce. Don't wait 20 years before you let him know b/c the longer you wait the harder it will be. I hope everything works out.

tell him the way you just told us...why keep his heart a racing if you are not in love with him...so,get in there and sit down and have a long hard talk with him...tell him how you feel..yes he will get hurt but he will always find someone else to love him for him...

depends on your age and such and why it isnt working. More than likely you just need to say that you need your space, have time apart, see what else is out there, let him know that you love him and want to remain friends and that your relationship did mean something but its not what you want right now.

I hate the term "in love". It is so cliche. So you don't want to make the beast with two backs with him. Tell him that it is not him, it is you. Tell him that you just want to be friends. Or just tell him you want to keep him in reserve in case you find someone better.

You have to say it just that way, and mean it. You can't say it and then sleep with him, or say it and then buy a house with him, or say it and then........
You have to say it and move on, leaving him to do the same. I due time, MAYBE you can be friends, but for now, you have to say it and show him you mean it.
