For instance, when you are first married it would last 5 years and then be automatically annulled unless you extended it.

If everybody did it, kids would'nt know anything different. Marriage as it is now is all we have ever know and maybe it's time to change it.

Whatever initial term was decided on would be final. No annullment or divorce except for unusual circumstances. You would have to wait until your marriage expired.

Marriage is not today, what it used to be. The place, in society, for marriage is changing. Like everything today, nothing is sacred as it used to be. I don't think anyone really doubts that.

Not many people are aware of ancient Celtic traditions. Handfasting is a lot like what I am describing.

This used to be quite common in western Europe before the advent of Christianity. It was call Hamfasting. A couple could live a year as a married couple with all the social benefits, and after a year they could decide if they wanted to make it permanent or go their separate ways. It worked pretty good, but the Christian church was all about keep tabs on everybody and making sure that the family tithed to the church, so eventually marriage was reduced to a lifetime monogamous commitment. Then divorce came about and it is pretty much back to exactly what you describe.

Bad idea. It would turn a sacred union into a disposable one. Why get married at all if you feel that way? You can just live together. Can you imagine the chaos with bank accounts, mortgages, living arrangements and children? Of course this has to be a joke question.

So you are not kidding? We should change the laws to please people who want disposable spouses? How about multiple spouses for people who dislike monogamy? I don't care what people do if they aren't bothering me, but do we as a society have to sanctify this depravity?

Marriages might last a lot longer if both parties knew they were getting a "performance review" every two years. It might help.

Of course, if you decide not to renew, it would be heck on the kids, but no different than a divorce.

Interesting concept.
Marriage is a life time sentence......errrrrrrrrr I mean commitment

Those of us who have a religious reason for marriage would stick to the lifetime commitmernt. Yeah, I am divorced. It happens..
