Captain Marvel.
Superman was a direct ripoff of Captain Marvel.
Don't get me wrong, though....I love Supes.

This is hard, but I think Superman can win. Even if Shazaam had Kryptonite nailed into Superman's body, Superman might still come out the winner. Superman has survived some pretty tough blows and I think he could survive anything that Captain Marvel can through at him.

The first time they met (Make Way for Captain Thunder!) Clark Kent met Willie Fawcett, because Captain Marvel copyright was still held by someone else. (That was like, back in the 70's, you might be able to find a back issue at a comic specialty shop.)
Even thought they were equally matched in strength, Superman won, because he got Thunder in a full nelson wrestling hold and would not let Captain Thunder go until he used his wisdom to figure out what the Monster League of Evil had done to turn him evil. Then CT said Sha-Boom and went back to his home dimension.
I figure that Superman would pretty much always win unless Cap hit him with some of that magic lightning. But deep inside, Cap is just Billy Batson, a twelve year old kid. Superman has a lot more life experience and smarts. (Even though Cap has the wisdom of Solomon to draw upon, he doesn't always apply it!)
"Age and treachery will always win out over youth and good intentions."

Superman and Captain Marvel did fight in Justice League Unlimited where Superman thought Lex was up to something and Captain Marvel defended him. He and Superman fought a classic battle going back and forth. Captain uses the Shazzaam lightning to beat him but it did not stop him and Superman holds him as a Billy Batson. Winner: Superman
P.S. - Superman would have won anyway because both are based on Strength and Superman is physically stronger.

Ah, the age old question which keeps most fanboys alive. There are some mistakes in the answers posted by others here, so please allow me to give you a lesson from Comic Book History 101
First, Superman DID appear before Capt. Marvel (A.K.A.) Shazam. Superman, of course, from National Periodicals (DC Comics), and Capt. Marvel appeared in Fawcett Publications, not long after Superman debuted.
During the 1940's, there was a big legal issue regarding whether or not Capt. Marvel was a rip-off of Superman, and DC sued Fawcett for copyright infringement, and actually won, and has owned the character since the verdict (and this is a whole other topic).
Believe it or not, you are asking a question that young people have been asking continually since the 1940's, and a lot of comic book fans love talking about.
Keep in mind that Superman, is, technically, a humanoid (not human) from another planet, and while he is extremely powerful, he is susceptible to Green Kryptonite, Red Kryptonite, and Magic.
Capt. Marvel, on the other hand, is essentially human, and when Billy Batson transforms into Capt. Marvel by saying the magic word SHAZAM!, he becomes an adult male. As Capt. Marvel uses magic, Superman IS susceptible to Capt. Marvel's powers.
Capt. Marvel has some of the same abilities as Supes, such as invulnerability, super-speed, super-strength, and flight, he has a power that Supes is weak against-magic bolts of lightning.
Capt. Marvel can issue bolts of lightning by saying the word SHAZAM! and direct them at whom he wants-but it can leave him vulnerable, as he might change back to Billy Batson when he does this (depending on what comic you read).
Someone else mentioned the Justice League Unlimited cartoon, and that's a great example, but if you want to check out a really great comic book where Superman and Capt. Marvel duke it out, read the Graphic Novel 'KINGDOM COME' by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, which came out around 1996.
After that history lesson, it is usually Superman who wins, because he is ALWAYS Superman, even as Clark Kent, and Capt. Marvel is still Billy Batson, a young teenager. All Superman has to do is avoid Capt. Marvel's lightning bolts and stop him from saying SHAZAM! (as in the Justice League Unlimited cartoon).
9 times out of 10, Superman will win, but Capt. Marvel, given the right circumstance, CAN defeat Superman.
If anyone else reads this, check out a question I am posting relating to this topic.

Captain Marvel would ultimately win a fight because his powers are magic-based. Other than Kryptonite, magic is Superman's only weakness.
