Generally speaking, if they were straight before transitioning about 90% will be straight after transitioning. If a male to female looks for a female partner before she'll look for a male after. I'm in the 10 percentile, I was married for thirty one years before I transitioned and I'm lesbian now, My partner is female.

I once attended a panel where a female to male post-op transexual told a story of how he had originally identified as a lesbian woman because he was confused...then, realized he was really a man---after the surgery he is now a gay man. His take on it was that he is a "gay person" so whatever gender body he found himself in, he was gay.

Really made me think a lot about sexuality and gender for a few days after hearing his story...very interesting.

According to one set of academic studies, about half identify as "straight" after transition, about a third identify as bisexual, and the remainder identify as homosexual. It should be noted, though, that most academic studies are only looking at "out" transgendered individuals - those who are stealth are not represented, and it is unknown what orientation is more likely for stealth individuals.

Breaking the various study numbers down, it appears that a significant factor is the age at transition - the younger someone transitions the more likely it is that they will identify as hetrosexual after transition.

The first link below is to a summary of one of the more comprehensive studies to date. (This study is currently being expanded and is expected to be complete in the next year or so.) The second link is to a general overview that focuses more on emperical evidence.

I'm M2F no surgery yet but i got a friend who is F2M TS and he still likes guys even after the surgery, Ive heard some rumors that once you change sexes that you end up not liking the gender you liked before the surgery, if your talking about SRS or GRS

define your question better. gay as in "men liking men" or gay as in being attracted to the same sexual organs as the other person? Because if they were gay AFTER the surgery, then that would mean they were originally heterosexual BEFORE the surgery. Think about it. A transsexual male to female who has surgery who likes women would be a lesbian, right? but prior to the transition, would be a heterosexual man. If the same transsexual male to female liked MEN (thus being gay) BEFORE the surgery, would make her heterosexual AFTER the surgery, in the eyes of 2 people having the same sexual ORGANS, but if you're saying would they remain gay on terms of attraction and GENDER then yes, they would still be gay. I am a transsexual FEMALE to MALE (born a girl, becoming a guy) and before my transition, I was considered a "lesbian" because I am sexually attracted to females, however, I never saw myself that way, because to ME, I am a man, and I like girls. I just happen to be in a female "shell" of a body, therefore, I see myself as a straight man, and all I'm doing is taking the body to match the brain, and I'd still be a heterosexual man in the eyes of society, becuase I still like girls! (am I making any sense?) GENDER IDENTITY and SEXUAL ORIENTATION are totally separate things from one another. I've known transsexuals who were gay men, became women, and then became lesbians..so explain THAT one to me ( I dunno either) and I've known transsexuals who were lesbians prior to transition, became male, and started dating men and became gay men! Sexual orientation is what you're attracted to between the legs, regardless of what's between your own. I really think they should separate it into "sexual orientation" and "gender orientation" though, because I think that would help explain why some transsexuals start as gay men and become lesbians after the surgery, is because they now relate to that GENDER (the feeling of what makes a woman a woman) and because of such, they find themselves attracted to femininity or transsexual males sometimes date men (even though they were orginally lesbians) after their transition, becuase they can now see the world from the perspective of a male and thus find themselves more atttracted to the male GENDER (what makes a guy a guy) did any of this help or make any sense to you?

I've known a few MTFs who were attracted to women after hormones and surgery, and I've known FTMs who were attracted to men afterwards. Your attraction for a particular sex does not change with surgery or hormone replacement therapy, it's an integral part of who you are!
