Why do you change? Why do you rebel? Why do try drugs? Why do you (or did you) go Gothic?

It was not my intention to pick on Goth per se as much as I mean a style that focuses on depression, sex, or drugs.

I think our kids have to find a way to separate from us as they prepare to enter adulthood. And for some reason the only way to do that is to drive us a bit crazy. They become more independent, more private, more moody. But just imagine how truly hard it must be to break the ties with your parents? It's just easier for them to think that we are 'old' and 'dumb' and 'clueless' about everything and better for them to think they know it all and can do no wrong. Don't worry though, they'll learn. As for drugs... something more serious may be going on and as a parent you need to get to the bottom of it immediately. Same for going gothic, although this may just be an innocent fashion statement. But it's always good to dig deep and find out if your teen is suffering from any other problems that you might not be aware of.

because they realize they will not stand out if they dont change. as for rebellion, drugs, and becoming gothic, people do it because its possible. if you are a goth in middle/junior high school, people will not accept you... but they will in high school. drugs were not available in my middle/junior high schools... so I didnt do them(not that I will in highschool, but they will be available then). parents will not let their 12/13/14 year old children rebel... they are young enough at that age to keep home and control easily. once in highschool, parents lose control and allow their kids to rebel. they just give up.

you answer is availability... you cannot do those things when you are younger, but you can once you reach highschool+

Um maybe cause they lived a sheltered life or parents expected them to be good all the time and they get tired of it. As far as picking on their style such as Goth. we all go through stages and have our own place or thing that makes a belong. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm speaking from experience because um I was one of those quiet teens and got tired of being what every one else wanted me to be. If you can't except your children for who and what they are then you don't deserve to have them.

the only reason i know the answer to this is because ive made the drastic change...i changed b/c i discovered who i wanted to be, i started to become my own person. i think this happens b/c well, we grow up and sometimes some people make the wrong changes so that they can feel like they are their own person and have say-so over their selfs.

when you meet new people you tend to want to fit in so you try new things and maybe you make friends with the wrong crowd and rebel from you parents because they might say oh why are you friends with them and you get mad about it so you do the stuff they dont want you to..
