crappy electrical system, out dated fuel injection, troublesome anti-lock brakes, 1963 Buick aluminum v-8 [OK they did get rid of the rope crankshaft seals a few years ago], lousy parts distribution in U.S., cooling fans that don't, air suspension system that wont hold air, gutless on road, power steering leaks, air conditioner leaks. now all this said it still is one of the most capable off road trucks, if you can get everything to work when needed on the same day. they do make excellent beaters-if you get rid of the luxoslop.

They are, I am afraid, notoriously unreliable. I had a friend who was a regional service director for them a few years ago and as we were both backyeard mechanics of some experience, and at least modest skills, we got to talking about the Land Rovers as they compared with other SUVs. He left me with the impression that for the privilege of paying an extraordinarily high price for the car you got a vehicle that devalued quickly and broke down a lot and required expensive repairs.

Isn't Land Rover part of Ford Motor Co.?? If so, that would explain why. Most Fords (and wanna-be Fords like Mercury, Lincoln, Land Rover, etc) have no resale value because they are $HIT! They fall apart after a few years. Fords are the crappiest cars in the world.

Land Rovers are notorious for extremely poor quality. After 4 or 5 years, there probably isn't much left that isn't in need of repair.

Land Rovers are "immitation" off-road vehicles (regardless of how many African saffaris you've seen them in on tv!). Because they are an arm of Jaguar, they sell for big bucks, but they're actually not so good quality-wise and so they depreciate rapidly. Get a Nissan or if you want big power with your higher quality, consider a GMC full size.

The reputation of Land Rover is somewhat tarnished. Consumers Reports almost always gives it poor marks in reliability, and that factors into low resale. Another thing...ALL VEHICLES ARE BAD NVESTMENTS, except Harleys.

My friend has a 98 Discovery and it has been a piece of crap. He has probably put at least 2,000 into repairs into it. They have all been small things, but he has probably had about 20 problems in about 9 months of ownership. He also doesn't drive it much.

Maybe because the gas mileage is so bad and the gas prices are so outrageous.

mainly, after they start needing parts and the owners dont want to upkeep them, they sell them. due to the high price of parts, the cars themselves don't cost all that much bc once you get all the parts that need replacing, it's expensive.

I am sorry I disagree with most of these answers. Like most top end cars they lose value quickly because there isn't a huge market.........repairs are costly but the quality of components very good. Here is a Land Rover Discovery II with almost 200K miles. Ask me questions if you like.
Mercedes, Bmw, Audi, Cadillac almost all luxury top end cars you can get cheaper..........the folks that buy them new generally trade up. I.e. The rich get richer.
