Hi, I work in a Shelter...We are suppose to look at ALL racoons as if they have rabies becaus they can harbor them up to a year without showing symptons..A shelter isnt the answer My co-worker raised one that we got in and it bit her son..It was 11 months after she got it..We had to Euthanize it and cut his head off to send in for tests to make sure it was rabies free...Your Racoon cannot go back in the wild he doesnt know how to take care of himself..They have a lady here in SC that does Racoon Rehab..She reteaches them how to hunt and forage for food,,But after four years Its not going to be easy if possible..DONT GIVE HIM TO JUST ANYONE..Coon hunters would love to have him to train their dogs. Call you local Wildlife Depts or zoos The wildlife dept would use him for educational programs to take into schools ect...God Luck

Why are you getting rid of him now? Seems like you did a good job making him into a pet, and now you want to dump him on someone else? Is he starting to act like a raccoon?

Try a wildlife rehab center. Unfortunately, it is too common that people take cute little wild animals into their house, teach them to like people, and then want to turn them loose when they are tired of them. This raccoon will not survive well in the wild because he has been trained to trust people, and would probably seek out areas that people inhabit. That would get him labelled as a nuisance, and probably trapped, euthanized.

Good luck, and I hope for his sake that you find a place to have him taken care of. In the future, please don't abuse a wild animal by trying to make it a pet.

There should be a local park, or science center/museum that would appreciate your fellow---That way children could see him up close and personal and lbe able to learn about these neat creatures.
However why have you had him for 4 yrs and now decide that you do not want him--please do not put him back into the wild after living this type of life--he would not survive well.

Well, be very careful because I believe it's illegal to have him as a domestic pet. But it is best to get him into a sanctuary or zoo of some sort.
