Round about the early 1800s dinosaurs we're all herded up into Saudi Arabia. They were shoved into a big blender from which came fossil fuels. Several dinousaurs escaped this slaughter. They wore clever disguises, but to the trained eye, they are quite transparent. Most notible among the survivors were John Candy (brontosaurus), Michael Jackson (pterydactyl), and George Washington (velicraptor). You can read more about the slaughter of the dinosaurs at your local library.

The most widely accepted theory is the so-called K-T event. There is no scientific debate over the event itself; it did happen. The debate is over what part it played.
The K-T event is a mass extinction, the 2nd largest ever (to the Permo-Triassic) is famous for the large bolide (extraterrestrial object) impact that occured off the Yucatan, creating the Chixulub crater. Glass from the crater is dated to 64.98 +/- .01 million years ago.
This event caused global devistation, evidenced by:
1) Differing Sr ratios from global wildfires
2) Microdiamonds from fried Carbon
3) Tsunami deposits found all over the southeast US
4) Stishovite (a variety of quartz which forms in extreme pressures)
5) Worldwide Iridium anomaly. Ir is usually found abundantly in space, but it is very rare on earth. All over the world, at the K-T layer, the amount of Ir is much higher than normal.
It is theorized that the impact created magnitude 12 earthquakes and blocked the sun for as long as 9 weeks.
Other than the bolide cause of extinction, people have theorized:
1. worlwide drop in sea level, causeing shallow water species to die and leaving a big niche out of the ecosystem.
2. worldwide (dramatic) cooling
3. volcanic eruptions/emissions
There is evidence for all of these playing a part, but the real question is how much?
As much as I love the Simpsons, it can't be used for scientific evidence. D'oh!

Most of the dinosaurs died off or became extinct from evolution or castroplies. But some evidence still exist today in some species. I think we are the oldest living species on earth but who really knows how we evolved.

There's a documentary on PBS right now that claims the dinosaurs became extinct after the Earth was hit by a meteor.

The meteor and the subsequent ice age killed them off. Other species DID survive then evolved into more species after the ice age ended

Gene Roddenberry time traveled to the past and nuked the earth to prevent dinosaurs, or as they were known in the now non-existent alternate future via evolution, saurians, from becoming the dominant species. Thanks, Gene, for saving humanity and bringing us Star Trek: Voyager!
