Hello!
I have lived here for 7 years, so I know the area pretty well. If you are looking for a singles/young people/'fun' beach, then you want to go to Fort Lauderdale Beach, (corner of Las Olas and A1A). Unfortunately, Ft. Lauderdale is being destroyed by 'condomania', and some of the fun bars have closed :-( If you want to see what it's like, go to:
http://www.elboroom.com They have a great web cam and you can see what the beach weather is doing, too! (it can vary mile-to-mile here, belive it or not!)
A family-oriented beach is Hollywood Beach. It's reminiscent of Atlantic City boardwalk--restaurants and shops line the beach.

The beach in Hollywood is AWESOME. Boardwalk with shops and restaurants. It rocks. You've gotta pay metered parking around there, but it's not bad!
