I'm sorry, while watching the world cup this is actually a question a friend asked me and I know nothing about France, but I know my stereotype of French people is that they would be white. For instance, I understand that in America we have say basketball teams that are mainly african american, just because well.. let's face it, white men can't jump and they're mainly better at it. So I'm just wondering if this is why France's team was mostly black (african?). Yes I'm actually asking this question and I know I will get flamed by some people for whatever stupid reason. Trying to bridge my gaps of knowledge. I had no answer to this question for my friend, so please free me of my ignorance.

Sorry I do not know the percentage, maybe it's only half the team or some of them.. if so I appologize. yeah i like that guy's answer about immigrants from haiti, that could be the case. Again, I appologize I'm not trying to offend, I'm sincerely asking so I can clear up my and others ignorance. Not such a bad thing is it?

Ok, I don't have an answer to your question. But I am from Canada and I wonder the same thing about hockey. Finally there is I think one black hockey player. Sorry, one very hot black hockey player.
It is not like half of our population is black, but you would think in the last how many years there would have been some.
I too associate France with predominantly white. But I don't see anyone with statistical knowledge on here so I guess we may need a trip to Wikipedia after all.

Because black people tend to be better athletes, and consequently better players?? There might not be many black people in France, but theyre still French Citizens and because they tend to be better athletes they tend to be on the teams. Its just like asking that question in any other country, except France just tends to have more than others, thats all.
And to clear this matter up, the following people that played for France in this past world cup are black: defensemen Jean-Alain Boumsong, defensemen Eric Abidal, defender Pascal Chimbonda, defender William Gallas, defender William Thuram, midfielder Alou Diarra, midfielder Patrick Viera, midfielder Claude Makelele, midfielder Florent Malouda, forward Sidney Govou, forward Sylvain Wiltord, forward Thierry Henry, forward Louis Saha, and forward David Trezeguet. Midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo is certianly dark skinned (but not black), and Mikael Silvestre is on the edge. So that is either 14, 15, or 16. The squad had 23, so over half the team was black. All of this information was obtained by their pictures in their player profiles from the fifaworldcup.com website. Simply go to http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/team/overview.html?team=fra and scroll down, on the right you will see squad with the player number, last name capitalized, and first name. That is an excellent question. I wondered the same thing. It's probably because immigrants from Haiti come over there.

I found a few links. It appears there are also many African countries that were colonized by the French empire. Kind of the same reason why there are so many East Asians in Britain?

There is nothing wrong with a lot of black people being on the French soccer team but I guess many of the African French soccer players are really good at soccer! I watched the last game and many of the black french soccer players on the french team were defenses and they were excellent. Thank-You I hope you report back!

Because they are good players and France need them. Besides do you know that France has many lands were the Blacks are the majority of the population

a) they were the best players
b) their parents are black
c) many people from former french colonies (in Africa) immigrated to France
d) they are french
e) minorities (blacks/immigrants) have more reason to succeed. (How many white middle class players are there on the French team ?)
f) football is colour blind. Talent not colour counts

because there are tons of muslims in France And half of Africa is Muslim. a better way to bridge the gaps in your knowledge would be to read alot more, I even read the encyclopedia.
