I'm not sure about banana plants, as all my experience has been with java fern. Java ferns can float too, but it's good to tie them to a small rock, because eventually they will attach themselves to it. I'm not sure if the same is true for banana plants... is it getting enough light? What temperature is the water supposed to be for it to grow properly? Also, are you sure the plant is meant to be completely submerged?

The only other thing I can think of is testing the nitrate level of the water. I don't know for sure, but banana plants might use the nitrate (comes from the ammonia your fish make) like food, and maybe it doesn't have enough. You can take a sample of your water to the pet store to check. You may also want to ask someone there about your plant.

Sorry I can't be of more help!

Buy some plastic plants. It's hard keeping real plants in a tank. The problem is the fish urine. The water becomes acidic, and plants suffer.

You should change water frequently, say 20% every 2 weeks. If you have for example a 20 gallon tank, 2 - 3 days before you do the change, take 4 gallons of tap water and put the dechlor in it. Then let it sit. When you do the change, remove 4 gallons from the tank and add the fresh water. Try to get the fresh water temp as close to the tank temp as possible before you add. You don't want to shock your fish. Changing keeps the fish healthier, too. High acid is bad for them.

Your banana plant shouldn't float...it should rest upon the surface of your gravel and not buried. If it's leaves are turning brown then it means you water is nutrient deficient or not enough light. You might need to buy an iron extract (which you can buy at pet stores in their aquarium area) that will aid the plant’s health. You may also want to check what type of lighting you have but banana plants aren’t very particular about strong lightning.

BTW - Java fern should not float...it has to be anchored upon a rock or bog wood in order to root.

You should get rid of the existing Banana plant and get a new one, I think it would be better for the fish
