Because conservative followers (like Rush's ironically named "dittoheads") are always willing to hold up their patriotism like it's proof that they are "the good people" who are always right. I believe that they identify with loud-mouthed authoritarians and powerful institutions because they want to feel infallible and self-righteous too.
There's nothing wrong with loving your country--I know I do--but it isn't a license to be a jerk. It doesn't exempt you from having to make sense. And loving your country shouldn't mean that you cannot acknowledge your government makes mistakes, or disagree with it, or question its actions. But with extreme right wingers who swing their patriotism like a club it means all those things.
Historically when people are were willing to justify anything and everything through appeals to patriotism it's been called Nationalism. It's been a great motivator for moving the sheep who blindly followed some of the worst regimes the planet has ever seen. So be aware, some people don't view your form of bumper-sticker patriotism as inherently positive. Love your country? That's fine, I'm glad you do. Wear your patriotism like a badge of honor? Well, good for you I guess, but don't expect everyone to fall all over themselves congratulating you and don't expect it makes you infallible.

I think it's because a lot of people assume that if someone is a patriot, or supports Bush, or supports the war that we obviously lack intelligence and must be getting brainwashed by someone like Rush. Most people don't understand that we just have different beliefs, different values, different ideas about what we should do as a nation. Let them think that, man! I have opinions about everything, but I get them from my brain not soley from the media. Keep standing up for America, and never doubt yourself over that. It's when you start putting America down that you should start feeling bad.

Because being patriotic is a big no-no in the eyes of the America bashing media, who for the most part have the power to shape not just this country"s views, but the worlds views.

standing up for America... and standing up for Bush... can, and often are, two very different things...
People also fought and died to protect many of the Freedoms that the current administration has stomped all over...

Or maybe it's because the only people who won't admit that Bush and company have royally screwed the pooch are a handful of right-wing idiot blowhards (like Limbaugh), and the dopes who listen to them, but aren't bright enough to see through their BS (you).

Same reason that when I say I don't believe evolution is true I get called a "fundamentalist Christian" or an "extremist." Name calling is a sigh that those arguing have nothing better to say.

Because American politics has become more like football then government.
It's "right wing wackos" VS "Liberal Hippie communists".
Don't take it personally, it's just ignorant people calling you names because they are unable to defend their own positions or engage in serious debate.

Until you explain how you "stand up for America," no one will really be able to answer your question.
A lot of Liberals think they stand up for America, too. They just have different ideas about what it means to stand up for America.
