The amount of ram you computer has does not affect what kind of video card would work best.
1st thing to look at is what size your power supply is. This is usually found by taking off your computer case and looking at a sticker that says watts or W. This is usually 200 - 600. On the video card box, you will see the minimum required power supply needed - make sure you have at least the minimum.
2nd, if your computer has 512 ram and a processor faster than 2 gigs, just about any video card would work great. If you would have less ram or a slow processor, then a video would not do much because your ram and process would be the weak point of your computer.

It really has more to do with the slots available on your computer rather than the RAM. What you should do is go to the manafacteur of your computer's website and type in your model number. There you should find the name of your motherboard. Type the name of the motherboard into google and you will see a specs sheet. From there look for AGP or PCI-E in the specs sheet. These are the two dominant types of graphical slots.
Note: ONLY PURCHASE 256MB OR MORE CARDS FOR THOSE LISTED BELOW (they come in both 128 and 256)
If its says AGP and you have a computer that is less than 3 years old with a "pentium 4" 2.66ghz or above or "amd 64" than go with the 6800XT if you can afford to pay 100-140 dollars (link is in the sources)
If you only want to pay 40 dollars or less (or have something worse than the processors listed above) and have an AGP slot than go with the FX5500.
If you have PCI Express and can pay 100-130 go with the 6800XT for PCI Express. Its better than the AGP version.
There really isn't a good low end PCI Express Graphic Card. You could try the X800 but its generally only 25 dollars cheaper and not nearby as good as the 6800XT.
Hope that helps.
