"South Pacific" is a classic, set in WWII, and has romance. For something with a Christmas backdrop, my all time favorite is "White Christmas", Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney (George's auntie), Danny Kay. Funny, great songs, dancing, story line with WWII as background (i.e., they are all buddies from the war).

Romances that also have a war backdrop, that's an interesting combination! (Kinda reminds me of marriage lol)
Older movies like

Have you tried looking into love movies that were actually made in the 30's to 50's? Gone with the Wind, Casablanca...I know those are cliche, but it's true.

One recent (relatively) movie that I can think of is "The Majestic" with Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey is a screen writer who gets amnesia, and ends up in a town where they think he's one of the townspeople who was MIA in WWII. I really liked it, and it was sooo atypical of Jim Carrey. I suppose it's not purely a love movie, but there is a strong romantic theme to it.

i know it's in color but it's not really much more modern. brokeback mountain, it might as well be set in ww2. annie proulx writes a story and ang lee makes a movie that fits in with what you're thinking.
