Technically this isn't a law, but it's so stupid I just have to tell it. I live in Washington state. Woman owns a piece of property through which a stream is flowing. Over a period of time, other people illegally dumped rubbish in her stream, including an old washing machine and many old tires. In addition her the bank of her stream were being over run with non-native invasive species, mainly Himalayan blackberries.

The woman wanted to clean up her creek. The state and many counties and cities have undertaken similar projects. The get volunteers to come in and pull out the non-native species and haul the trash away. So this woman hauled the trash out of the stream on her private property and spent many hours removing the non-native plants. If you have ever tried to rid yourself of blackberries, you can understand what a difficult job this is.

Anyway, the point of all this is that the state has fined this woman for doing what state and local governments are doing because...she didn't get the proper permits to haul trash off her own property. They are perfectly happy with the results of what she did. The streambanks are re-growing native vegetation, the fish are happy. The cost of the permits would have been approximately 12 to 26,000 dollars with the cost of the environmental studies she would have had to have performed in order to get the permits. So here in Washington, don't ever think you own your own property, you may be disappointed.

I have heard that there is a law in Ohio still on the books that says when driving and you come to a 4 way stop, you should get out of your car, fire your shotgun in both directions, then you may proceed through the intersecion. Don't know if it's true. Also, In Cleveland, Ohio it once was illegal to wear pattenleather shoes because you could use the shiny surface to see reflections up women's skirts.

I don't know if it's the dumbest, but it is the most annoying to me. It's the no-smoking rule in restaurants. I don't really want to get into a debate about it, but I feel that we steadily losing the power of choice in our personal lives. How can this be democracy?

I don't know if this is a real law in Oregon or not but:

It is illegal to whisper "dirty" things in your lover's ear during sex.

People may not whistle underwater.

It's illegal to cross the road while walking on your hands. It's also illegal in one town to have colored Christmas lights outside. Neither are enforced, as far as I know.
