At my school all the popular kids think it is "uncool" if you like to read books. How does reading books make you seem geeky? Reading is a great way to spend your time. So why do they hate it so much?

Unfortunately, reading is too often seen as only school related. So when people see you reading, they associate it with school work and being too "nerdy". I wouldn't worry too much, when they read that one great book that really changes them, they'll understand. But don't let their opinion of reading change yours. Reading is, as cheesy as this will sound, a gate way into other worlds. Don't let their ignorance take it away from you.

Books are just a thing that got stuck in the nerdy category at your school. (At my school it was ear muffs.) I know it's hard to imagine ever getting out of school and moving on to some other place, but probably you'll end up someplace where there are many people who value intelligence over popular trends. And books can help you be intelligent. So keep reading:) And don't worry about appearing geeky. As you said, reading is a great way to spend your time. Don't let them convince you otherwise.

They may actually like to read but many of them view it as a social stigma attached to "nerdy" kids. I don't think its so much that reading is uncool but rather that when kids are reading they are sometimes aren't participating socially in other things which can give them the appearance of being kind of an outcast.

Go your own way, babe. You will respect yourself more and others will respect you, too. Now, when I was in high school (not all that long ago) I was a super bookworm, but I was still fairly popular and had lots of friends--they just knew reading was my thing. If the "popular" kids you know aren't interested in reading, oh well, that's their problem. Maybe they just enjoy doing other things or are victims of groupthink--who knows? Keep up your reading. If it's something you enjoy, who knows? Maybe YOU can rub off on THEM :)

All right all these people really don't need to bash these "cool" kids. Odds are they read occasionally wither it be magazines, news on line, or books. But they don't do it because it makes them look cool like football basketball or soccer would therefore they don't glorify the fact that they do. They will prolly learn to love reading later in life like I did.

Do you think it might be because being cool takes up a lot of time? You have to go to all the "right" places, you have to be seen in all the "right" clothes, you have to either play or watch the "right" sports, you have to hang around with all the "right" people. Doesn't leave a lot of time for actually sitting down with a book.

And you have to despise anything to do with school - that really shows how mature you are - not!

Because they grew up in a generation where visual input is glorified above all else. When they were children, the TV was their babysitter. When they were good, their parents took them to a movie. They played video games since they could move their fingers.
BAsically, since they aren't seeing anything happen, nothing's happening, which is boring. Constant visual stimulation has stunted their imaginative capabilities.
Or, I could be wrong.

Because they do not know how to read and they want to become a janitor when they graduate. This way they will live in a rent studio, and they will never be able to afford vacation. If you are smart, just smile and do not let them know that you actually read.

Because they can't think for themselves. There is always someone dictating to them what to do. You should observe them sometime- they have to dress the right way, act the right way, like the right kind of music, hang out with the right people etc..... Being popular is not for people who can actually think for themselves.
