I just heard on the radio that in the USA wages are about $5.50 hr
is this so and what jobs would pay that ...in Au the minimum would be about 14.50 hr

Sounds like somebody needs to do their research.

Minimum wage in the US is generally considered $5.15/hour. But many states and other jurisdictions have their own, higher minimum wage. And a few, Kansas for example, have LOWER rates - it's $2.65 in Kansas.

Now if you're asking about _average_ wages, that's obviously a higher number. There are a number of ways to define "average":
-Median - the "middle" wage if you lined everybody up. In the US for 2004 it was $24,000 - work out the hourly for yourself
-Mean - what most people think of as average - $33,846 in 2004.

Me, it's hard to say because I'm self employed, and my billing rates vary depending on the situation. Plus I don't keep track of my hours.

No the minimum wage in USA is aroun $6.25 now.. The jobs who pay minimum would be fast food (I.e. Burger King, McDonalds etc.)
