On a laptop that is unplugged it is safe. But it really depends on the how severe the thunderstom is. If it's a heavy, severe one, if you need to be on the computer go on an unplugged laptop. But in light thunderstorms that aren't too severe, it will be OK..

Heh heh heh
Your parents are in their 50's huh?
No telephone, turn off all the lights, no computer, if fact, while God's doing His work just stop EVERYTHING and go to your room or a quiet spot and just be still! Am I right?
Back when your parents' parents were raising them, technology was brand new. Telephone poles and power lines were great conductors. Even today there is still a chance for the power towers and lines to draw a lightning strike but the design of today's distribution systems makes the chance of being injured by a lightning strike through your computer or telephone or any other electric device inside your home very unlikely.
Still, depending on where you live, you may want to turn off electrical appliances during a thunderstorm more for the safety of the appliance than anything else. If power suddenly fluctuates or surges there's always the possibility that you could suffer some damage, like a fried motherboard or memory or power supply. Nothing that you couldn't repair but why risk it, most Thunderstorms only last several minutes.
Turn off your computer, and read a book. When the storm passes your risk passes with it.

No. it extremely is not extra volatile than keeping brick at the same time as status in a rainstorm. The cellular telephone isn't grounded, so lightning can not use it as a conduit to the floor. And the cellular telephone doesn’t have any great static can charge, it extremely is what lightning releases.

If you are near anything electrical there is potential danger during a thunderstorm but if you have surge protectors you should be OK.

Unless you have a very good surge protector (which includes ports for network/telephone cables) then you should turn off your computer during a storm. My computer was ruined once precisely because of this problem.
