It helps to clarify what the company is all about and what (if anything) they might stand for. It also helps you to know if they have any standards...and what they might be. Then you can work within their framework based on your opinion of their standards. They will also offer goal statements for some of the same reasons.

If you define your own standards and targets you have little excuse not achieving them, and so you try much harder.

Research has also shown that when employees were asked (secretly) how much they thought they should be paid, the salaries mentioned were only a little higher than what they were actually getting. Apparently too small salary leads to resentment, while too high salary leads to a sense of insecurity. People are happiest with a fair salary.
