router with a firewall works good

Depends on the setting. Home use: Get a good firewall (linksys, netgear), if you have XP turn Windows Firewall on. In computer management there is a shares folder where you can see what you have shared out and who has access. You can lock that down there. On the router turn the ICMP off (ping).
Work: get with your network admin/Computer person and have them help lock down your computer.

if you're asking that question now then it's already too late and your PC has probably already been hacked. Re-load Windows and start from scratch....and get a personal firewall (Norton Internet Security) to keep everyone out to start with. Good luck.

Get a software firewall like zone alarm or sygate, or get a router of some sort that does network address translation on your LAN.
